Purposeful Provenance for Naked Wines
Founded in 2008, Naked Wines has reimagined the traditional wine industry by connecting independent winemakers directly with consumers through its innovative crowdfunding model. By funding talented producers around the world, the brand empowers winemakers to focus on crafting exceptional wines while giving customers access to exclusive bottles with authentic stories and a strong sense of provenance through their online subscription box model.
Naked Wines approached us at Kingdom & Sparrow to create a series of distinctive label designs for three producers: Virgile Joly, Tomas Buendia, and Lay of the Land by Mike Patterson.
Branding | Messaging | Positioning | Packaging
For Lay of the Land by Mike Patterson our focus was on precision, geography, and discovery in Marlborough, New Zealand. Inspired by cartography and scientific diagrams, the labels incorporate circular layouts, fine-line illustrations, compass motifs, and metallic foil accents to deliver a sleek, premium finish reflecting Marlborough’s unique landscape.
For Virgile Joly, we were tasked with celebrating the Mediterranean biodiversity and eco-conscious winemaking in Languedoc, France. We created a punchy, nature-led aesthetic featuring an illustration of the native hoopoe bird – Upupa epops. Wings blend into botanical roots to symbolise the harmony between local wildlife, sustainable farming, and terroir.
For Tomas Buendia we focussed on craftsmanship, heritage, and high-altitude vineyards in Castile, Spain. Built around a unique lozenge-shaped label with a tactile, lino-cut illustration showing hands holding the sun above grapevines. Earthy tones emphasise land stewardship and traditional Spanish winemaking.
The key challenge was to celebrate the individuality of their winemakers and communicate the character of each wine, so while each range required its own visual identity, all three projects were rooted in a shared objective: to express the connection between winemaker, landscape, and terroir through thoughtful, contemporary packaging design.
