Craft gin branding
Tarquin’s Gin | UK
Creating Tarquin’s, one of the UK’s most well-loved gin brands
The Challenge
Tarquin was one of our first clients. Back in 2013 he came to us on the cusp of the gin revolution in the UK, wanting to create a brand for Cornwall’s first craft distillery in over 100 years.
The Process
Back then the operation consisted of one small copper still and a lot of hard work and enthusiasm – everything was meticulously done by hand, so it truly was small-batch and artisan. The brand needed to capture this, as well as the product quality and Cornish coastal roots. Tarquin’s ambition was to succeed far beyond the south west, so we needed to create something that would appeal to gin lovers on a broad scale.
To align with the processes and ethos behind the brand, we designed a bottle and label with premium hand embellishments including a signature and dipped wax seal, which to this day remains one of Tarquin’s most recognisable features. We illustrated a distinctive brand emblem – a north coast puffin carrying a juniper leaf, which was our Cornish take on the dove of peace with the olive branch.
The Results
Since launching Tarquin’s has not only become one of the most well-known craft gin brands in the UK, but one of the most prestigious in the world (their Sea Dog Navy Strength gin was crowned ‘World’s Best Gin’ at the San Francisco World Spirits competition in 2017).
In 2018 Tarquin’s worked with an agency to update its look with a custom bottle design – but the ethos and core brand assets we created have remained and stood the test of time, keeping Tarquin’s ahead in what is now a highly saturated market.
